About W.J. de Kock

Wynand Johannes de Kock (DTh, University of South Africa) is Professor of Practical Theology and Director of Openseminary at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University, near Philadelphia. Originally from South Africa and now living in Australia, he has served for four decades in churches, nonprofit organisations, colleges, universities, and theological seminaries across three continents. He developed Openseminary, an innovative, inductive approach to theological education that integrates theological reflection, ministerial practice, and spiritual formation. His books include Out of My Mind: Following the Trajectory of God’s Regenerative Story (2014) and On Being in the Middle: Doing Theology in the Face of Uncertainty (2024), in addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters. He also writes The Rooster in Flight, a public-theology newsletter exploring faith, doubt, and glimpses of the divine in life’s in-between spaces. He loves teaching, writing, painting, making things, and equipping women and men to make space for life as followers of Jesus. He is married to the artist Marian Bosch; they have two daughters, Carmen and Zoé, and a canine companion, Archie, who reliably gets him out for an early-morning walk.
